Creating a Personal Values Statement Rooted in Faith

In a world filled with competing priorities and constant noise, having a clear understanding of your personal values is essential for living a purposeful life. As Christians, our values are shaped by our faith, the teachings of scripture, and our God-given purpose. A personal values statement not only serves as a compass for decision-making but also reflects your identity in Christ. It will help you align your life.

What is a Personal Values Statement?

A personal values statement is a declaration of the principles and beliefs that guide your life. It defines what is most important to you and acts as a framework for how you live, work, and interact with others. For Christians, this statement is rooted in biblical truth and aligns with God’s plan for your life.

Steps to Create Your Faith-Based Personal Values Statement

1. Reflect on Your Faith Journey

Begin by reflecting on your relationship with God and the moments that have shaped your faith. Ask yourself the following questions:

What are the key experiences that deepened my walk with Christ?

How has God uniquely equipped me with talents and passions?

Remember this scripture, "For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them." (Ephesians 2:10)

2. Identify Core Biblical Values

Consider the principles that resonate with your faith, such as love, integrity, humility, stewardship, or service. Pray and ask God to reveal the values He wants you to embody.

Pray this scripture verse, "You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)

3. Align with Scripture

Your personal values should be grounded in the Word of God. Choose scripture verses that support the values you identify. You can do an internet search to help you find what resonates. here are some examples:

Love: "Your every act should be done with love." (1 Corinthians 16:14)

Integrity: "The just walk in integrity; happy are their children after them!" (Proverbs 20:7)

Service: "As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace." (1 Peter 4:10)

4. Write Your Statement

Using your reflections and chosen values, draft a concise statement. For example:

"I commit to living a life that reflects Christ's love and integrity, serving others with humility and grace, and stewarding the gifts God has entrusted to me for His glory."

5. Review and Pray Over It

Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you refine your statement. Ensure it reflects your faith and aligns with God’s Word. Make changes when needed.

6. Live Out Your Values (align your life)

A values statement is only meaningful if it translates into action. Regularly revisit your statement to ensure your choices and behaviors reflect your faith-based principles.

Why a Values Statement Matters

Having a personal values statement helps you:

  • Stay rooted in your faith during challenging times.

  • Make decisions that honor God and reflect biblical teachings.

  • Share your testimony through your actions and choices.

Align Your Life

Creating a personal values statement is a spiritual exercise that deepens your understanding of God’s purpose for your life. It’s a reminder of who you are in Christ and how He calls you to live.

Refer to this scripture often, '"But as for you, be strong and do not slack off, for there shall be a reward for what you do.” (2 Chronicles 15:7)

Take time to prayerfully craft your values statement. Let it be a beacon that guides you toward living a Christ-centered and aligned life.
